Bible Symbols

The Bible is its own dictionary. Where Scripture uses a symbol — a beast, the waters, oil, leaven, a woman — it also tells us what it means. Here are 167 of them, grouped by theme and anchored to the text that defines each one.

Most meanings below are defined by Scripture itself — the verse cited beside each one is its definition. A few carry an interpretation tag: these are sound historic readings — reached by applying prophecy to history (for example, identifying a beast with a kingdom) rather than stated in a single verse. The tag keeps the two kinds distinct, so you can see where the Bible speaks for itself and weigh the rest for yourself.
